As I’ve spoken about on my YouTube channel, I’ve made a fair few rediscoveries in my make up collection since moving house. I love finding a hidden gem in my existing stash, it’s like the thrill of shopping without harming the forever-abused debit card!
Over the years I have collated a lot of bases, many of which are high end. I decided to slap on a different golden oldie each day of the working week to see whether they are both the pennies.
Monday – YSL Forever Youth Liberator Foundation
This was everywhere last year and I was sucked in even more by an online deal. Upon purchase my skin was very oily so I was really disappointed by this. It’s serum-based formula meant I was a shining beacon of chip fat by the time I got to work, fitty.
Second time around, I’m much more of a fan. Back then I was adamant to achieve the perfect matte complexion but now I prefer a natural glow, which this provides. With my combination skin, I still needed to powder my T-Zone but it lasted all day and left a natural finish. Is it worth the pennies? For me, no. The glow it provides is similar to what I like to achieve from a BB cream but the added full coverage is not for me.
Tuesday – Nars Sheer Glow
You know those tiny bugs that you can’t see but can hear at night as they zoom towards your ear? Yep… FIVE bites on my cheek from one of those nasty bastards. This called for a full coverage favourite in the shape of Nars Sheer Glow, the combo-skinned gal’s best friend. Decent coverage, doesn’t go cakey and can be blended with a brush in a flash.
Yes the whole pump-with-no-lid thing is annoying but it gets all the ticks where it matters. Worth the pennies? 100%.
Wednesday – Make Up Forever HD Foundation
This is another much-hyped product that I managed to nab in Sephora in Barcelona. This is really full coverage, a little more than I would tend to use for day to day. In photos, this genuinely makes your skin look airbrushed but after wearing it all day, I found this gets a little cakey and clings to any dry patches. This is perfect for a night out or event but unless you have a lot of angry blemishes, I wouldn’t recommend it for everyday. Worth the money? Only if you require really full coverage.
Thursday – Diorskin Nude BB Creme
By now, the bites had all but faded (thank da lord) so I was back to my usual everyday BB creams. This Dior offering is just a dream – smooths onto the skin perfectly, covers any redness while still looking natural and smells clean?! This lasts all day, doesn’t look cakey and it’s a one-minute blend job aka the perfect working week base. Worth the money? I’ll take ten back ups plz.
Friday – Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua
Something I always forget with this is to shake the bloody bottle! The formula separates in the packaging so you can end up with a strange coloured liquid on your brush if you’re not vigourous. In terms of coverage and application, my thoughts are similar to the Dior offering. I like the consistency and the natural coverage it provides but after a 12 hour day, not much seems to be hanging around. Worth the pennies? I would say yes – the perfect minimal base for weekends and low-key days.
What is your favourite high-end base?
