Nothing is more saddening than perusing the beauty counters, lusting over the latest releases and pretty things on show, but having to walk away because you’re a student/normal person who can’t spend £50 at the drop of a hat. Samples are the holy grail for us penny-counting folk, giving us a taste of the high life and everything new, usually for no cost at all!
Brands seem to have been distributing samples in magazines more and more as of late, especially drugstore haircare brands with new launches. Found yourself a Chanel sample? Ding ding ding you’re a winner!! In store, the best way to try out a product which is a little on the spendy side is to see if they have a miniature version in the travel section – for example, this Soap & Glory Clean Getaway Set costs £10 and includes minis of their Hand Food hand cream, Calm One Calm All bubble bath, Clean On Me shower gel and Righteous Butter body lotion – the full sizes of which would total around £28.
Loyalty cards are an absolute must have for beauty lovers as they give back without you even realising. I can build up £10 worth of points with my Boots Advantage card without even realising it, especially with the help of the extra points coupons I get in the post and their exclusive offers on the Boots app! Stores such as Superdrug, The Body Shop and Space NK all have their own version and can earn you free gifts in addition to building up points to spend! I like to build up my points and splurge on something I wouldn’t usually invest in to ease my guilt (although I currently have Graduate Guilt on any spree exceeding £10).
If you’re happy to spend a bit of money to get your samples, beauty boxes are the perfect way to have them delivered to your door. My favourite is Birchbox – for the basic subscription it costs £12.95 per month and includes 4 or 5 samples. In boxes in the past I’ve received the Laura Mercier foundation primer, Caudalie Divine Oil and the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque. If you love any of your samples, Birchbox have their own handy online shop where you can buy the full sized products.
So there ya go! There’s no need for us regular folk to suffer without the joys of luxury products and new launches. Remember, you can always go to counters and simply ask for a sample to try. The assistant is never going to know if you intend to buy the real thing *wink wink*
